Charity

Over several years we've held a number of Living World Health and Holistic Fairs to raise funds for a variety of charities. To coincide with Gill’s third visit to SCAD (Southern India) in February 2010, when she will be teaching children to massage each other and also helping people with 'tapping' therapy, we are holding a Living World Fair to raise funds to provide rainwater harvesting tanks for children in Tamil Nadu, Southern India. They cost just £400.00 each. They are constructed alongside schools and catch the monsoon rain and store it in the water tanks.

The rain water passes through a filter and is stored in a sealed unit, often underground. The water is then used throughout the year for the children, often lasting the whole year until the next monsoon rain. A hand pump is positioned on the tank to access the water. It is a great boon for the children. It means that they have less chance of catching water-borne diseases and it is a good motivator to go to school.

We think these tanks are a jolly good idea and embrace the themes of self-sufficiency, health and education.

If you are unable to make the Fair and would like to make a contribution to this worthwhile project, please feel free to contact me, Gill, at Eos: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it Tel: 01202 424991

Plus as part of our fund-raising initiative we would like groups of therapists to come to your school/business and offer Indian Head Massage or Foot Massage to you, for just £5.00 per session. These monies would also go into the projects. Feel free to contact me if you think this is something that would be good .. indeed very good for you/your colleagues/employees.

Gill’s visits to India - SCAD/Salt of the Earth

I was first introduced to SCAD via a client who'd previously visited their HQ as part of an Action Aid camp. Based on her feedback I decided to check SCAD out myself. So I contacted Salt of the Earth (SCAD’s UK partners) and was told by Murray Frankland that I could either be part of an Action Aid volunteer group or if I had skills that they could use over there, that I could go as an independent supporter.

Whilst it was very appealing to go as part of a group and undertake a specific project, such as painting classrooms, the dates didn’t tie in with my schedule and so instead I went as an independent volunteer.

My first adventure to SCAD was in 2006. I was so amazed at the sheer scale of what SCAD manages to accomplish for the underprivaleged and disabled children in their care that I decided to return in 2008. Whilst at SCAD I spent my time teaching the teachers of the mentally-challenged children basic reflexology and helping out in the Occupational Therapy department by massaging some of the physically challenged children.

I also had the opportunity to lead a motivational NLP-Coaching workshop for several of the managers who headed up the various projects in Tamil Nadu. Another worthwhile addition to my adventure was when I was given the opportunity to visit several of their projects in rural India and to meet many of the beneficiaries of SCAD's work.

What impressed me about SCAD?

Their solution-focused outlook. They work with all age groups and focus on the people who would otherwise have been denied a chance to live a fulfilling life.

The vision started in 1985 with Mr Cletus Babu and a small group of committed friends wishing to make a difference to the unreached. He met Amali, a dedicated social worker, and they married in 1988. Together they embarked upon their journey of making lasting changes to the lives of people living in southern Tamil Nadu.

From the UK side of the operation Mr Murray Frankland of Salt of the Earth has been key to their ongoing development since 1988. And their work has gone from strength to strength. In a book they produced in 2006 called 'Let My Country Awake' they note: 'We are working with the most neglected groups such as gypsies, snake charmers, leprosy patients, saltpan workers, palm tree climbers, small and marginal farmers, orphan elders, disabled children and Dalits'.

Salt of the Earth organise 'Sponsor a Child schemes' from £12.00 per month. Sponsorship can be by individuals or groups (such as, for example, youth clubs, schools and so on). Salt of the Earth also co-ordinate support from companies who want to help sponsor a village from £1000.00 a year.

If you would like to help SCAD in some way, perhaps by sponsoring a child, a village or by becoming involved in fundraising feel free to phone Murray Frankland on: 0116 2766439 or email him at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
